Read first, or watch first?
Any of the movies works as an on-ramp, because the outline of this story belongs to everybody. But be clear with yourself about what the book is: not a brisker version of the film, a different animal with the same names. It's told in a sly, old-fashioned voice that works best read aloud, and it lands hardest on the grown-up doing the reading. Watch whichever version your family likes, then read it for the narrator and the last chapter.
