Why we do this

AI. AI. AI. We use it at work. Kids are using it more and more at school. There's a lot to like about it. In fact, it has helped us assemble the classic texts on this site into the wonderful EPUB editions we provide.

But there's something foundational that it erodes. Writing and reading are extensions of our thoughts. Putting pen to paper, keyboard to screen, the process of reading and writing is the process of thinking.

When we use AI, we all begin to read, write and, by extension, think in the patterns that AI uses. The more AI becomes prevalent, the more all of us will begin to interpret and understand our world and stories through this same AI rhythm.

The classic books are an injection of pure human creativity and authenticity. They are fast becoming one of the few reliable ways to read stories that have not passed through the pressing, stamping and cutting stages on the assembly line in the AI writing factory. They are bolts of lightning from another time that cut straight through the AI fog to awaken our imagination.

As if this wasn't concerning enough on its own, we are also being besieged by modern books written and designed to cater to low attention spans. My son reads Dog Man and Captain Underpants and my daughter reads Dork Diaries. And I hate it. I let them read it, reluctantly. Every time, a piece of me dies. Ok, I'm being dramatic, a fart joke every now and then doesn't stink hurt. But in seriousness, it does feel like letting them watch TV with pages rather than developing their imagination and comprehension skills.

Sifting through the noise of the modern library is more time-consuming and aggravating than digging through crumbs and candy wrappers in the sofa cushions for the TV remote. It is nearly a full-time job no parent has time for. That's why we also strive to serve up modern recommendations that you can feel good about leaving your child with.

We hope that by bringing these stories front and center, we can bring a trustworthy library into your home that helps foster a love of reading, an imaginative mind, and rich conversations for the dinner table.
