Read first, or watch first?
Watching first is a sound plan here, especially for a younger kid. The Disney half hour is rated G, the chase is the same shape, and a kid who arrives knowing the beats can enjoy Irving's jokes instead of straining for the plot — which matters, because the sentences are long and 1820. Then the book gives back everything the film had no room for: the food, the arithmetic, and a last paragraph that quietly tells you it was a pumpkin all along. One thing to know before searching: the 1999 Tim Burton film shares the title and is rated R for graphic horror violence and gore. When you want the family version, it is the 1949 one, sold as The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
