Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty — kids get to discover the source code of stories they thought they knew.
Most tales run five to ten minutes — a complete story with a beginning, a monster, and a wedding before bedtime resistance kicks in.
Talking bones, golden birds, foolish wishes, grisly justice — the unsanded weirdness is exactly what kids remember.
Sixty-two tales collected two centuries ago from German firesides — including the originals of Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Hansel and Gretel, back before they were smoothed and sweetened. Short, strange, and endlessly re-readable: this is the book to leave where a reluctant reader will trip over it.
Each tale is a complete five-to-ten-minute read, which makes this the most flexible book on our shelf. One at bedtime, a few on a car ride, or a kid grazing on their own all work. The classic translation reads simply. Take the content note seriously, but know that the menace is part of why these tales work. Generations of kids have handled it fine, and most of them asked for another.
The brothers Grimm collected these tales in the German states during and after the Napoleonic wars, when “Germany” was still a patchwork of small kingdoms and the stories lived in kitchens, spinning rooms, and nurseries, told entirely from memory. The Grimms wrote them down as scholars, afraid that world of firelight telling was about to disappear — and they were right. By the time our Victorian English edition appeared, the tales had already crossed every border in Europe on foot.
Modern books (still in copyright, so not free) that scratch the same itch.
A modern retelling that keeps the darkness and adds jokes — the perfect bridge from these tales for grades 4 and up.
The villain's side of the story, warm and funny — for the kid who wants to live inside one tale for a whole book.

We shelve it for grades 2–6 — that's where the language and the length sit for a reader on their own. Read aloud, it works earlier, from about age 5–6 — kids follow a story by ear well before they can read it alone.
The unabridged text measures 1080L Lexile. (collections vary with the tales included.) In everyday terms: grades 2–6, and easier as a read-aloud.
The originals bite — villains meet grisly ends. These are the real Grimm tales in the classic English translation — wicked stepmothers dance in hot iron shoes, wolves get opened up, justice is medieval. Nothing gratuitous, but nothing Disney either. Each tale stands alone, so any one can be previewed in a few minutes.
Yes — the complete, unabridged text. Grimms' Fairy Tales was published in 1823, so it's in the US public domain: sharing it free is legal, and there's no signup or catch. We build the ebook ourselves from the original edition.
